Fonio seed, the future of organic food

Fonio seed, the future of organic food

The fonio seed is a cereal that is grown in West Africa and has everything to please organic food lovers. This gluten-free superaliment, very healthy and rich in nutrients, is increasingly popular in the world.

Last week, Senegalese President Pierre Thiam praised the merits of fonio seed, a cereal unknown in the West and yet widespread in Africa, especially in Guinea, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso and Nigeria. These African countries cultivate this small seed which is consumed in abundance there. Fonio seed deserves to be better known in the world because it is gluten-free and high in magnesium, calcium and zinc. Since last year the Senegalese president has managed to sell it in the USA through the organic chain Whole Foods.

This miracle seed is also available online in France. Its price varies from one brand to another between 3.65 € to 4.19 € for 500 grams. If you’re one of those who have just discovered fonio, be aware that its taste may seem bland, which is why it’s best to include a seasoning to pair it with. You can also grind it into flour and make good cupcakes. To your recipes!
