International Women’s Day: the big food brands that are honouring women

To mark International Women’s Day, some brands and restaurants have decided to pay a tribute to women. They have all done it their own way, but they have each succeeded in creating a buzz around their actions.

A McDonald’s restaurant in California in the United States has chosen to turn its iconic yellow M upside down in order to turn it into a W for “women”. Although it’s not a huge commitment for the famous fast-food giant, it is still a nice nod to the fair sex!

The beer manufacturer BrewDog also wanted to use this day to launch a beer ironically named “Pink IPA”, a play on its “Punk IPA” beer, and which, according to the label, is a “beer for girls”. Not everyone welcomed this initiative, but the brand has pledged to give 20% of the profits from the sales of this product to charities, which do work on women’s rights.

Then there is the fast food chain KFC who for their operations in Malaysia decided to replace Colonel Saunders, the emblematic character on their logo with Claudia Saunders. Ms. Saunders is one of the people responsible for the delivery of the famous spices to the restaurants in that country, a job that keeps her busy until late into the evening. The Malaysian website for the chain calls Claudia “the 12th ingredient to the Colonel’s 11 secret herbs and spices.” KFC chose this symbolic action in order to pay tribute to woman and their success in the workplace.

The whiskey brand Johnnie Walker chose to bring out new-look bottles. Instead of Johnnie Walker, we have Jane Walker, a woman replacing the traditional man on the label.

And on a smaller scale, some restaurants have decided to run special offers and to donate some of the profits to charity. Like the American café Maman which has pledged to donate 15% of the profits from its new drink which was specially created for the occasion to a charity which helps new mothers.
